With the development of network technology and storage, the data accumulate more and more. Mining information from the larger volume of data is necessary. As a wide applicable technology, Data mining can be applied in the petroleum exploration. This paper gives a general introduction of DM (Data Mining) and KDD(Knowledge Discovery in Database), focuses on discretized data , Rough Set and Fuzzy Set are applied to the DM(Data Mining ). Based on this theory, this paper gives a resolution to well logging interpretation for stratum. In intelligent information system, integer data or character data are often required, but real data is often continuous. To fulfill these needs, a method using the set of Walsh functions has been developed. The dimensions are not needed in this method. Continuous data are divided into discrete ranges by means of low-pass-filter and the data are labeled with integer and symbol data. This method can be applied for discretizing well logging curve. And some ideas about Rough Set theory and Fuzzy Set theory are applied to the DM (Data Mining). In this paper regarding logging suite in the petroleum exploration as information system from which mining stratum recognition model—Uncertain Decision Rules—successfully used in logging interpretation for stratum recognition.
