Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing is a key technology in communication. It can resist inter-symbol interference, and multipath shading influences, which is suitable in digital broad-band application that must cope with highly dispersive transmission media at low receiver implementation cost. Now it is applied in wireless local area network, digital audio broadcasting, and it will be the key technology of the fourth generation of mobile communication.This paper investigated the timing and frequency offset estimation algorithm of OFDM burst transmission system. Based on the fundamental principle of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing, the synchronization system structure is discussed , and the timing and frequency offset estimation error affecting demodulation is analyzed and simulated. An improvement to Minn's preamble based synchronization method is proposed to overcome the severe timing error in multipath environments. In addition the maximum likehood estimation algorithm based on OFDM cyclic prefix and a new frequency offset estimation method using the data after decision in OFDM receiver before FFT are all analyzed and simulated particularly.
