The technology of harbor recognition has an important place in the military affairs. It is also a very complicated problem in the area of pattern recognition for the sake of the complex environment and features of the harbor. The recognition of the harbor target as well as its damage detection is included in this paper. The research results are as follows:(1) A new knowledge-based recognition method of the harbor target is presented. The features of the harbor image are fully used in the three-level process. In the low level of process, water area is segmented with a new improved fuzzy enhancement technique and region-growing algorithm; in the middle level of process, the potential harbor targets are extracted with region-labeling method; in the high level of process, fake harbors are eliminated and the classification is fulfilled with region-merging approach. The whole automatic recognition method is proved to be very fast, accurate, feasible and effective.(2) Change detection algorithm based on image matching is used to analyze the harbor damage. After the change detection, the damage evaluation is made.
