The research goal of this paper is to work out a set of testing method and systemto measure the dielectric parameter of the microwave and millimeter wave dielectricresonators, which is easy to use, automatic, high speed and accurate. By evaluation ofcharacteristic equations of cylindrical dielectric resonators, a method of lower orderresonant modes when measuring the dielectric parameter has been gained. Theresonant frequencies of the lower order resonant modes are got from the presentedcomputing formulae by using Matlab software. So the working mode (TE011 mode)can be distinguished from the other lower order resonant modes according to thecalculated resonant frequencies. And by using graphic method the question ofmultiple solutions of the characteristic equation is solved. So the reliability of the testresult is ensured. For the measurement of dielectric resonator of low permittivity,the radiation will be severe if the dimensions of dielectric resonator are notappropriate. So in the paper the design dimensions of dielectric resonators that aresuitable for measurement are presented. First using Matlab, the relation between thecut-off frequency, resonant frequency of the lower order resonant modes and dielectricconstant, diameter, height of the material has been examined. Utilizing the Matlabprogram to calculate, with the contrast of results on documents, the exactness andaccuracy of the program have been verified. The topic of this paper is to measure thelow waste materials so the resonance method is employed. The merits of this methodare high measurement sensitivity, exact measurement result and the result of the wastecan reach10?5 , which is barely achieved by using other methods. Then in this articleresonance method is adopted. In addition the testing method and testing set have beendiscussed. The testing system which consists of the Synthesized Sweeper, computer,testing set, detector and the Scalar Network Analyzer has been established. At thesame time the automatic test procedure that controlled the Synthesized Sweeper andthe Scalar Network Analyzer with VB have been written out. Finally many samples ofdielectric resonators (both high permittivity and low permittivity) are tested by thetesting set. It is shown that the analyses accord with the measured data on samples.The test technique can be used for the automatic, rapid, accurate, broad-band,nondestructive, and batch measurement of complex permittivity of dielectricresonator.
