Wireless communications is undergoing a key period. The major challenge in today's wireless communication is how to serve the explosively increasing demand of multimedia service within the limited bandwidth. Among those emerging technologies, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication architecture has showed its infinite potential to improve spectral efficiency dramatically. By deploying the element of multiple antennas at both transmitter and receiver, MIMO has been regarded as an inevitable promising approach to exploit maximum spatial resources among many emerging technologies. In this paper, we first introduce the research background and basic concept of MMO wireless communications, and then induce the distributed MIMO system which is attracting much attention in the field of MIMO wireless communications and state detailedly the fundamental problems to be solved, thus pointing out the research interest of this paper. In Chapter 2 of this paper, three types of attenuation in wireless channels, i.e. average path loss, macroscopic fading and microscopic fading, are firstly introduced, and the total attenuation is the summation of the three effects mentioned above. Then, some problems emerging in the traditional centralized MIMO are analyzed, which make the importance of the distributed MIMO apparent. Next, some advantages of the distributed MIMO and some problems due to 'distribution' are discussed. Finally, the mathematical description of the distributed MIMO system model is presented. In Chapter 3, some primary knowledge is introduced, including the theory of detection and estimation and the theory of functional analysis, which set up a theoretical foundation for the deduction of the detection algorithm to be studied in the next chapter. In Chapter 4, the detection issue of the distributed MIMO is discussed. Firstly, an basic principle in which the distributed MIMO detection differs from the traditional centralized MIMO detection is pointed out. Then the maximum likelihood...
