The research on CSCL is prevailing over the field of education technology which contains the collaborative mechanism. It consists of operating methods, strategies and assessment. But the collaborative group formation methods and the support have been neglected. The different forms of group formation produce different peer relationship and the group structure that affect the quality of the groups.Some researchers have realize that the importance of the decision in group formation, such as personality type, capability, learning style, academic achievement, peer relationship. And especially, heterogeneous groups have been consistently found to be more effective than homogeneous groups.This paper describes the lack of the automatic group formation mechanism in various learning system and give the approach to assign students to collaborative learning groups in CSCL .With the core of group formation — the heterogeneous grouping — the paper give the design of Group formation System for collaborative learning groups in CSCL and implement the procedures by web-based architecture to support the automatic group formation.The system provides various approaches to assign students to collaborative learning groups automatically according to heterogeneity. The groups formation will be implemented automatically based on the students' characteristic test result, the academic achievement. The system provides four characteristic types to test the dissimilarity of the students, including personal faculty, collaborative capability, personality and learning style. Besides the students' characters and the achievement the system supports assigning groups according to the peer relationships and also support teachers to assign groups by themselves or randomly.This paper also presents the heuristic algorithms to form groups and settles on a solution to the translation of numerical characters. The forming methods is describes as maximizing the diversity of members within groups, and also as minimizing the differences among groups.This paper presents the group formation methods in collaborative learning based the theories of learning style, peer relationship and characteristic of students and develop the Group formation System for Collaborative Learning Groups in CSCL which can make up the absence of the collaborative learning system. The application can apply to various learning environment independently and effectively.
