The great merit of MIMO (Multi-input-Multi-output) is high usage factor of frequency spectrum . So MIMO systems theoretically can achieve very high data transmission rate on band limited frequency spectrum. From the 90's of 20th century, people have made a lot of scientific researches on applying MIMO in wireless communication systems. At one time, more researches developed on OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) because it can effectively lessen the severe effects of frequency selective fading. OFDM not only has been widely applied in broadcast communication, but also has been adopted into the WLAN standard. In the next generation communication standard OFDM will be the core technology. Now, how to combine advantages of the MIMO and OFDM in a wideband wireless communication system has been a pop research.Basing on many researches about MIMO and OFDM, the article mainly does research on combining the two technologies to design a wideband wireless system (MIMO-OFDM system). The main technologies include Space-Time Codes, correlative channel, channel estimation, system synchronization and so on. After analyzing and simulating the corresponding arithmetic, detailed design architecture is given in the article.The article is organized as follows.In the chapter one, the phylogenies of MIMO and OFDM are succinctly introduced. The relative merits of the two technologies are mentioned at one time.Chapter two gives study on the characteristics of the wideband wireless mobile communication channel, especially highlights the correlative characteristics of MIMO channel. Basing on simulating and comparing some simulation methods about common wireless channel, a modeling method of MIMO spatial correlative channel is expounded in the article.The last chapter gives the block diagrams of the transmitter and receiver for MIMO-OFDM system. Space-Time Codes, channel estimation arithmetic and synchronization arithmetic are introduced. The main work focus on the channel estimation arithmetic.Finally, according to the limitation of the MIMO-OFDM system designed in the article, some ideas are discussed to improve the system performance.
