With the rapid development of fiber communication, especially development of highly speed and DWDM system, dispersion has become the most important factor to limit the development of optical fiber communication after the attenuation has been resolved. On the system of higher speed and longer distance, it must be compensated to realize the transmission. This paper explains dispersion of the single-mode fiber from theory, and proposes the formula of the relationship between chromatic dispersion and wavelength by analysis, it has significance to the research on the dispersion compensation. Some of familiar dispersion compensation techniques have been studied and compared, for example fiber grating dispersion compensation,dispersion compensate fiber etc, it discusses their compensation theory, application and future development in this paper. Meanwhile, their separate virtues and shortcomings have also been analyzed. This paper emphasizes the dispersion compensation technology of high-order mode. By theory analysis, the high-order mode has huge negative dispersion; and it has great FOM by compute, this result has significance to the dispersion compensation in fiber communication. Especially LP02 mode has huge dispersion and good energy distributing, so we choice LP02 mode as dispersion compensate. According to the characteristic of high-order mode LP02 dispersion compensation, the dispersion compensation project has been designed in this paper, and it design the mode transformers between LP01 mode and LP02 mode. This paper analyses the theory of mode transformer by using the binary optical element and beam shaped principle, and calculates phase distributing of the two elements in the mode transformer, and detailed discussion and analysis made solid basic for the further design of binary optical element. At last, this paper simulates the whole project of the dispersion compensation. From the simulation results, it is revealed that the high-order mode dispersion compensation technology performs better than general dispersion compensation technology. The conclusions in this paper have some significance and referring values to future study on the dispersion compensation technology.
