Embedded Linux is an operation system which is cut off and modified from common Linux, and which can run on embedded computer system. Since it has the advantages from both Linux and Embedded System, Embedded Linux has large market prospect and commercial opportunity. At present, one of the focus applications for the embedded linux is porting the linux kernel to run a microcontroller or microprocessorNow days the ARM(Advanced RISC Machine) is a mainstream CPU architecture for embedded system and have been used broadly. Therefore the developers play a special emphases at porting linux kernel to ARM CPU. This thesis presents the author's work hi development of the Embedded Linux Operating System for his graduate degree. Most of the thesis focus the important techniques at the porting the Linux kernel to ARM platform, first the thesis give a introduction to the features of the ARM architecture and hardware organization. Afterward the thesis make a detailed analysis at the Linux kernel source code and techniques for proting Linux to ARM CPU, such as memory management, interrupt handle, kernel's startup procedure and Bootloader. At last, basing these discussion and analysis, the thesis present a fictitious model as a reference for the developers who want to porting Linux kernel to a ARM platform.
