In the Post-PC-Era, the computer technology has infiltrated into many aspects of our daily life. It has been applied not only in scientific computing but in pervasive computing field. How to manage vast information timely and rapidly and how to provide information services handily and efficiently to customers are new tasks of the computer. Under the background, networked embedded computing comes to the key technology. The amalgamation of digital information technology, no matter the wireless network entering our house or sharing digital services through broad band, will be the main topic of the high-tech industry in the next years. As the precursor and the kernel of digital family, digital TV (DTV for short) is coming into our life. In the future, DTV will be not only a broadcasting receiver but a multimedia service platform. In the DTV system, it is a key problem how to let applications run in a transparent environment without caring about the detail of the infrastructure, such as different operation systems and h ardware. The real-time embedded middleware c an r esolve such a problem. It allows multimedia applications to run in different infrastructure and help applications to 'write once, run everywhere'. Meanwhile, it reduces the cost of the management of the digital broadcasting and let the customers spend less money in enjoying digital services. The thesis mainly researches the technology of DTV middleware. Firstly, by the analysis of the middleware and the real-time embedded system, it gives the characters of the DTV middleware. Secondly, it analyses DTV specifications in the world, and mainly focus on the DVB-MHP. Basing on these works, the thesis designs a set of DTV middleware architecture and explains the main parts of the middleware. Then it introduces the media library (IMF), the Java virtual machine and the graphic library used in the DTV middleware. At last, it explains the DTV application manager in detail, which we designed as a part of the DTV middleware.
