Polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry, which combines SAR polarimetry with SAR interferometry, can improve the measurement precision of interferometric SAR and enhance the ability to explain the scattering mechanisms of targets. So it has become an important direction of SAR application development. In this dissertation, we studied the methods of terrain measurement using polarimetric SAR interferometry, and explored the role of polarimetry in SAR interferometry.The basic principles and methods of SAR interferometry were studied and some problems in it were analyzed, such as signals processing, height measurement errors, coherence of signals, etc. The basic theories of the polarimetric SAR measurement were studied and the basic models of polarimetric SAR measurement were analyzed in detail. Based on all of above, the theories of polarimetric SAR interferometry were studied, and several pivotal problems were lucubrated, including vector interfero-metry, coherence optimization, and coherent scattering decomposition. A new improved algorithm was set up in the dissertation, and it can solve the problems caused by the fact that the measured polarimetric data are always not equal to the real scattering matrixes of the target. And then the measurement methods of terrain parameters using polarimetric SAR interferometry were studied and the practical process was set up correspondingly.The studies were made further by means of simulation. The target scattering, the terrain and the SAR interferometry were simulated and the simulation data were used to test and analyze the provided algorithm.It has been proved by theories studies and simulation experiments that polarimetric SAR interferometry makes it possible to improve the measurement precision of the under-vegetation terrain and to estimate the height of vegetation targets, and that the performance of the new improved algorithm is better than that of the conventional algorithm.
