Ultra wideband(UWB) antenna and feeder network are used in rader, electronic countermeasures and communication widely, especially in UWB-rader, electronic jamming and UWB-communication. Microstrip antennas(MSAs) are very popular for their low profile, low-cost and light weight. Although MSAs have many advantages, they typically suffer from narrow bandwidth. Increasing the bandwidth of MSA has been a primary goal of research. At the same time, the UWB feed-network become very important.In this paper, the successful design of a UWB MSA element and a UWB feed-network are presented. The technology of optically controlled phased array antenna is introduced.1. A UWB MSA element was introduced including the microstrip balun combining with microstrip line tapered slot antenna. The design is simulated using Ansoft HFSS software. The impedance bandwidth and radiation bandwidth of the element is 10 octaves.2. A serial circuit power divider prototype is presented. An UWB divider is constructed using the serial circuit incorporated with the shunt circuit power, which is wideband and low size. A power divider was simulated and tested. The simulated results show a good agreement with the measurement.3.The antenna element and feed network are required large bandwidth in UWB antenna array. Because of the restriction of aperture effect and the aperture traverse delay, it is difficult for conventional phased array radars to get wide instantaneous bandwidth under wide scan scope. In order to get wide instantaneous bandwidth must apply the true-time delay technology to phased array antennas. A photonic control of phased array antennas system is designed. Wideband and wide scan characteristic of photonic control of phased array antennas is demonstrated.
