With economic development and popularization of Internet, it needs some services such as HTTP, FTP and etc between each remote branch of enterprise. Its requests are increasingly high for the data efficiency and reliability based on TCP protocol of transport layer. In the WAN, due to its characteristics of long link and high packet loss rate, and the correlation and repeatability of data, TCP transmission efficiency in it is not high. Therefore, optimization of TCP protocol mechanism shows great significance and very high application value.Aiming at the issues mentioned above, the main contents of this paper are as follow:(1) The main principle of WAN data compression technology is analyzed, including: theoretical introduction of data compression, analysis of data redundancy elimination and data compression algorithm.(2) The disadvantage of traditional TCP when working in WAN is analyzed, and some improved TCP mechanisms are put forward. The improved TCP mechanisms mainly include slow start improved, selective retransmission option, large receive buff, improvement of congestion control algorithm and TCP proxy. Compared with the traditional TCP, the performance of improved TCP protocol mechanism is obviously improved.(3) Design the improved TCP proxy combined with WAN data compressinon technology based on above analysis, which includes FTCP, WAAS and DRE/LZ. DRE/LZ uses WAN data compression technology to save the bandwidth resource. And, FTCP deals with data stream through the WAN by modifying transport layer protocol, which enhances the WAN bandwidth utilization, and improves speed of accessing server.(4) Provide a virtual environment of WAN to test TCP proxy. The paper analyzes the experimental data and result, demonstrating the correctness of theoretical analysis and the feasibility of design method.
