With the rapid development of optical communication technology, the proportion of optical fiber in communication system transmission channel has become greater. In order to ensure that the network is run stably, we must find out fiber fault timely and effectively.Commonly, we need to use OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometry) to determined fault. For traditional OTDR, the cost is very expensive and it is difficult for system integration. The main objectives of the present research is to design a PC-based optical fiber fault monitoring system in order to make up for shortage of traditional OTDR.In the research, the system includes hardware and software. Hardware are composed of light transmission and detection module, FPGA control module and an external USB2.0 interface module. Software function is implemented by PC's application software. There are five parts in this dissertation in order to display my research:The first part is to mainly describe background and purpose of this research and development and status of OTDR. The second part begins by introducing testing principle and performance of OTDR. The third part is to present control and disposal of OTDR work process. And then go on to explain function anf implementation solution for modules in the system. In the last part is to put forward the upgrading scheme of the hardware and software about the system, and then analyse system application prospect. In this system, I use the ADI's AD9629-40 as AD acquisition module, the sampling frequency is 40MSPS; USB interface chip is from Cypress Company, the model is CY7C68013; FPGA adpot Altera Corporation CYCLONE III series chips EP3C16E144C8N; for firmware design, adopt KeiluVision2 as development environment; FPGA design use Quartus II software as a development platform, employ Verilog HDL as the development language; for application software design choices Microsoft's Visual Studio6.0 C++as a development platform.
