Based on research of the existing optical fiber geometric measurement method, a new method use the techniques of digital image processing based on SOPC (System On a Programmable Chip) is presented for the optical fiber real-time geometric measurement.In the paper, fiber splicing equipment working principles and welding quality related factors are proposed in the beginning, the SOPC embedded systems are designed as the optical fiber splicer hardware platform, including image acquisition, storage and processing functions, all tasks are unified dispatching under the Niosâ…ˇprocessor. Through researching fiber splicing process, the optical fiber splicer software system structure is designed, cooperating each hardware module during the splicing process.Aiming at designing the fiber core geometric measurement module, the paper presents a precise and practical fiber core parameter measurement method based on digital image processing for the Niosâ…ˇprocessor. First, perform image collection and storage for testing fiber with optical microscope and image acquisition system, then preprocess the collected original image to get binary edge image, finally perform linear detection and parameter extraction for the image to obtain expected result. The whole measurement part is automatic and customizing for the fiber geometric, totally eliminates human errors.According to the need of fiber splicer, optical fiber core parameter, such as the fiber core diameter, the cutting angle and the fiber distance, can be calculated after finishing the corresponding calculation, the above parameters can be used as fiber splicing data quality evaluation. Using the SOPC platform's unique advantages, software improvement can be made in order to shorten the program running time, improve operation efficiency. In the system, optical fiber image is collected and storage in 320X240 resolutions, and the data accuracy can reach 0.7 micrometer. The measurement accuracy has certain improvement space by using higher image acquisition resolution and the measurement precision.
