University Presidents Of China Evolving Role Of Research

University President is the organizer and operator of the university, as well as the guider of the university reform and development. The evolution of role of the university president is closely related with the change of the politics, economy, culture and the higher education model in our country.Having Retrospected the change of the role of the university president in different times since the late Qing Dynasty, we found that, because of the long-term centralized educational executive mechanism and planned-economy mode, universities had always been attached to the government and the education administration and received the leadership of the educational administration passively, which had damaged the independence and the creativity of the university president . With the beginning of the reform and opening-up policy and deep development of the market economy and educational systematic reform, the role of the university president has gained more and more attention from academic fields. The phenomena of educational 'administrationization' and 'bureaucratization' of the university president, which was formed in the university management system, along with the role distraction, unclear role position, and lack of nuclear role, all has brought out new pressure and challenge for university presidents. This article aims at studying the role of the university president since the late Qing Dynasty. By using the method of historical documents , we come to a conclusion that, through hackling and generalizing the role evolution of the university presidents and pondering over the reasons of the role evolution systematically, the main role evolution road for the university presidents is from the government officials in the late Qing Dynasty to the educators in the Republic of China to the statesmen in the early years of the foundation of the new China to the managers from the reform and opening-up until now. We also sum up how to position the role of the university presidents and analyze the general trend of the role evolution of the university presidents in the future.
