How to educate gifted and talented students is a key topic in the field of gifted and talented education.American colleges and universities offer gifted and talented students Early Entrance Program,which is a special acceleration education and allows students to enter colleges and universities one year or earlier.Recent years research made by American scholars shows that the number of students in this program and colleges and universities offering it is on the rise,and most students in this program are employed by America's best agencies when they are at school or graduate.Because little attention to the method is paid and little research is made on its application by mainlanders,this study aims at exploring Early Entrance Program from a whole. For approaching the purpose,reading and analyzing relevant references are the most essential steps.This study employs literature research method,analytical method,historical method, inductive method,comparative method and case study method as instruments,and focuses on the point of view such as history and context,status,characteristics and evaluation of Early Entrance College Program.The intention of the dissertation is to make more researchers and scholars in field of education in China have a better understand of Early Entrance College Program as well as the status and trend of gifted and talented education in America,and a deeper reflection on the current situation of special class for gifted young in China.The whole dissertation covers five parts.Part one with title of introduction focuses on the literature review and the paper design.Part two introduces the history of Early Entrance College Program,its content and the context in which Early Entrance College Program developed.First, examine the development and history of Early Entrance College Program.Second,analyze and explain the contextual factors from the three aspects:external educational factors,internal educational factors and research experience of Julian C.Stanley.Part three introduce the status of Early Entrance College Program,mainly including the program's purpose and mission,conduct institutes and process,expenses and financial aids as well as characteristics and evaluation.Part four is the case study,which selects the Early Entrance Program of Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science(TAMS) and California State University,Los Angeles(CSLA) as the typical cases,introduces them in detail and makes a simple comparison with each other.Finally, based on the results mentioned above,conclusions and suggestions as well as further research are provided.
