John Leighton Stuart, a Chinese born American, had an important impact on Chinese Society during the period of Republic of China. In the 20 years as president in Yanching University, Stuart made brilliant achievements in the university management. In this paper, I do the special review in the management thinking and practice of Stuart when he was in Yanching, also study the management factors how Yanching became a first-class universities at that time and reveal the main contributions made by him. By means of the researches above I discuss the inspiration that Stuart and Yanching University can give to today's high education management.This paper can be divided into five parts:The first part: John Leighton Stuart's life experiences. Since Stuart is general a negative image in the eyes of Chinese people, it's necessary to show his complete life experiences for paving the way to study Stuart's management thinking and practice.The second part: John Leighton Stuart's educational practice in China before 1919. Stuart was born in China, but accepted American higher education with a strong religious nature in America. As soon as came back to China, he made a depth study of Chinese cultures. At the same time, he contacted Chinese actual society through sermon. And then he became a seminary teacher thinking of social transformation. All of these made him a combination carrier of Chinese and Western cultures.The third part: John Leighton Stuart's educational practice in China after 1919. Stuart owned the characteristic of west culture integration that others difficult to match, thus successfully assumed his newly established post of president of Yanching University. However, due to the bad basis of the new university, he had to raise school funds through donations and ultimately built the beautiful YanYuan of Yanching University.The forth part: John Leighton Stuart's management thinking and practice in Yanching University. Stuart firstly adjusted the school goals of Yanching, diluted the school's thick religious purpose and atmosphere, made the university step into secularization direction. He sized up situation, increased the number of Chinese teachers, absorbed Chinese people participate in management, and gradually realized the goal of socialism. In the management of teachers, he made a fair system of paid between Chinese and Western teachers, appropriately attracted outstanding person with ability enter the university, improved the teacher's quality. Also he paid attention to the training of young teachers, making the supply of teaching force adequate. In the management of students, he improved the quality of students through merger of a high-quality students' college and strengthen the Yanching entrance examination. By means of serious reward and penalty system, urge the students to take the initiative to concentrate on study. In teaching management, urgent need subjects were continuously increased, advantaged subjects were strengthened, all of these ways made many subjects step into the national first-class level. Stuart in accordance with the principle of general education, made Yanching University's curriculum provision systematic, the introduction of point system and refined standard score made general education implemented. This series of measures protect Yanching University enter the ranks of first-class universities in China.The fifth part: The successful management experiences of Stuart and Yanching University. University should have its own ideal, the unique school motto will undoubtedly have a huge incentive to the teachers and students. The development of school is inseparable from the campus harmony. Teacher's harmony, in first and foremost, can rely on remuneration gained by teaching and pursuing their studies. Student's harmony lies in the creation of conditions to allow students to participate in school management, reflect their initiative and motility. The form of university management can not be machinery, it should be paid attention to the combination of system and emotional management. The successful experience of Yanching University shows that the president's influence plays a pivotal role in the school building.
