Psychological Status, Self-state Mode Of Communication And The Relationship Of The Quality Of Marriage

As for the improvement of life quality, the quality of marriage is asked to fit the high standard of contemporary, the popularity of marital consultation and pre-marital instruction just show their concerns. Transactional Analysis as a Popular Psychology has been well known in China recently, many marital consultants, family therapists, even managers of enterprises and institutions apply this theory in their practices, however, the research in this field is in scarcity. According to the hypothesis of the theory and other researchers' investigation results, through the questionnaire separately completed by 157 married couples who lived in Shanxi province with their offspring, the current study investigated the relationship among life position, ego state, communication pattern and marital quality. The conclusions are as the following:1. Age and birth order showed significant differences on the marital satisfaction, while the education, income and birth order showed significant differences on the couple's communications.2. The I factor and U factor of life position were powerful predictors of marital quality by controlling the significant demographic variables, and dominance analysis indicated that the I factor had more power in the predicted variance.3. The pairing analysis on life position showed significant differences on the marital quality, the spouse both taking I+U+ Life positions had the best marital quality than other paring couples.4. Life positions showed significant difference on the communication patterns, and who take the I+U+ life position reported more constructive communication and less demand/withdraw and mutual avoidance communication than other life position takers.5. The constructive communication pattern and mutual avoidance communication pattern predicted significantly the marital quality by controlling the significant demographic variables, the demand/withdraw communication pattern had no significant power in this process.6. The pairing analysis on the communication pattern showed significant differences on the marital quality, the spouse both report constructive communication pattern had the best marital quality than other paring couples.7. The I factor can directly forecast the marital quality, and indirectly predict it via ego state and communication pattern. The U factor totally forecasted the marital quality indirectly via ego state and communication pattern, ego state predicted the marital quality via communication pattern. The way that I factor and U factor working on the marital quality via ego state and communication pattern depended on the differences of ego states. Finally, there is no significant relationship between the free child ego state and marital quality.
