Essence of Chinese Language Course is a central issue in the basic theories(or foundations?)of Chinese Language Course and influences valuation of the practice and theory. Meanwhile, the ideas on essence produce corresponding stipulation to its development, implementation as well as its evaluation. Thus different essence views or their each change can cause tremendous changes in Chinese language course. So arguments about the essence is not only"the direction"debating, but also"the source"of the curriculum problem.Using the basic principles and concepts of system theories, this article analyses"What is Chinese language course"synthetically. There are two ways to the goal: One is theorical inquiry, focusing on"Where is the essence"; the other is practical inquiry, focusing on"Where is the problem"."Essence"and"problem"are connected through the function and content of Chinese language course. Among them the logic is: If the contents of Chinese language course reflect the speech essence, the Chinese language course has positive function, and vice versa. From this, the essence and the function rely on each other.The paper firstly makes the brief review on the history of studies on the essence of Chinese language course and obtains the point to the research contents and the analyzing framework.This paper advances in the deductive method. In the supposition to"the speech essence of Chinese language course", the paper then replies"What is speech"for participating research comparatively and obtaining the value approval.The essence of Chinese language course manifests intently the function, which students' mutual transformation ability between language factor and meaning of Chinese language course. The most important function of attaining speech ability also displays the value of Chinese language course. Therefore this article's focal point is from"What is Chinese language course"to"How the Chinese language course can exist", which is the problem of function and structure. So the answers to the essence of Chinese language course can be explained by the following propositions:"What are the ingredients of the Chinese language course"and"What does the Chinese language course do?In following the thinking of"function-structure", we seek to analyze the elements which compose the structure and catch the speech characteristics in the system of Chinese language course by the function, structure and elements.In a structure, different factor has different status and role. Among the factors, the central factor plays the decisively role to the function and the structure. Thus this article attempts to analyze the central essential factor—the curriculum content specifically. In the time dimension of curriculum content, we discovered the null state in the Chinese language course which promotes to further understanding the essence of the Chinese language course. The essence of Chinese language course stipulates its own research methodology and the logical starting point of research. The Chinese language course should display its speech essences through the construction in course content.With the requests of social development, the Chinese language course appears its speech characteristic and breeds day by day. Thus moves towards the establishment status.
