Objective: To investigate achievement goal of medical students at higher vocational educationlevel, to compare differences in achievement goal between two sexes, between differentspecialties, between different grades, and between different sources of students.Methods: Using multistage stratified random cluster sampling, and achievement goal orientationquestionnaires , we studied 315 students , in Grade One and Grade Two, in four specialties,in Shanxi Medical College for Continuing Education. And the analysis was made to investigatethe relationship between achievement goal and academic performance.Results:1.This study demonstrated that the performance avoidance goal of these students was notfavorable for their academic performance; and the effect of performance approach goal andmastery goal on academic performance was not confirmed yet.2. In aspect of achievement goal, there was a significant difference between grades, sexes, sources ; but no significant difference was found between specialties. With their grade ascending, achievement avoidance goal and performance approach goal of the students decreased greatly; female students used the two goals more often than male students; and countryside students used mastery goal more often than city students.3. Based on regression equation formed by grades, sexes, sources and performance approach goal, there is correlation with performance approach goal and grads and sexes, performance approach goal and guades experiment negatively.4. Based on regression equation formed by grades, sexes, sources and performance avoidance goal, there is correlation with performance approach goal and grads, performance avoidance goal and guades experiment negatively.5. Based on regression equation formed by three achievement goals and academic performance, achievement avoidance goal was a remarkable and negative predicative source of academic performance. At the same time, the equation showed no significant effect of performance approach goal and mastery goal on academic performance.6. The performance of the students who held multi-goals was better than that of students who held only one goal.Conclusions: Negative effect of performance avoidance goal is remarkable in the medical students at higher vocational education level. There are differences in achievement goal between grades, between sexes, Multi-goals students may achieve better performance than one-goal students. In psychological guidance, we should lay emphasis on the reduction of achievement avoidance goal.
