Secondary School Students' English Learning Motivation

Vocational and technological education has been important in modern educational system. The development of economy and technology requires more intelligent talents with higher technological ability and fluent foreign language communicating skill. However, most of the students who enter vocational school show less interest in EFL learning and they're lack of incentive to learn.Facing such unsatisfactory situation, author claims that the lack of motivation is the potential factor causing the ineffectiveness of English teaching and learning in vocational secondary school.Aiming at he problems mentioned above, the dissertation tries to explore the relationship between the motivation to learning and the students'learning performance, differentiate the intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and gives some suggestions to solve the problems. First, it illustrates the background and significance of this study;Then author studies the theories on motivation from following perspectives: bio-behavioral, cognitive, and social constructive. Some subcomponents of motivation are also explained in this chapter.On the basis of theories, a small-scale research was carried out in Dalian Light Industry School to prove the assumption. Based on the research, we analyze the possible reasons existed in students'EFL learning obstacles. Through the experiment the assumption is proved to be true, that is, there exists the correlation between students'motivation to learning and their learning performance.Finally, the thesis puts forward some suggestions on the methods to motivate learners in English acquisition, such as helping students set career goals, changing teaching approaches, building up students'beliefs in learning, giving proper feedback, and so on. In short, English learning is a very complicated process and fit is affected by many factors, but motivation plays a crucial part in EFL learning in vocational school. It's worth caring for and exploring for us language teachers.
