It is pointed out in The Physics Curriculum Criterion for Compulsory Education Junior High School that scientific exploration is an important method of learning as well as an important content of learning, which plays an important role in cultivating students' fine scientific attainments and training their abilities of judgment of value. At present, it is a big puzzle for physics teachers of junior high school how they can examine effectively students' abilities of exploration, and whether examinations and tests can work as good guides to physics teaching. The solution to the problem will positively promote the reform of junior high school physics teaching.Combining the working experience and the theory of modern educational measurement, the author of this essay presents a tentative analysis of three questions about examinations of abilities of scientific exploration in junior high school physics:"What to Examine"—a preliminary research on examination objectives, contents and standards, with the help of research results concerned both at home and abroad."How to Examine"—an analysis of types and functions of examination questions with living examples, suggesting general techniques of setting exploratory examination questions and points for attention. It deals with the techniques of setting exploratory examination questions in four aspects of choices of materials and conception, frame and formation of questions, improvement and adjustment, examination and check. It also deals with the points for attention in working out the standards of grading."Results of Examination"—setting an examination paper to test students' abilities of scientific exploration according to the examination objectives, carrying it out in some schools and giving an analysis of the result, proving the positive correlation between the results of written examinations and students' abilities of exploration.
