The traditional village rules and customs as an important constituent of Chinese traditional culture have far glorious history. They were certainly authoritative standards of folk behaviors, which were situated between the official system and the unofficial system and which were situated between the law and the morals. The traditional village rules and customs changed the law into the rules and governed the village by the rules, which both manifested and implemented the request of state law, and also reflected the general villagers' desire of moral emotions. The village rules and customs paid great attention to the absorption of traditional moral principles and the important moral standards, turned moral principles into the rules, carried on "the morals legalization". Simultaneously they made the state law as the backing during implementation to overcome the insufficiency of the moral principle and the compulsory potency. They not only brought honor to and internalized the standards of ethical morals, but also achieved the maintenance of the order and strengthened dignified feeling of national law, which made them become the effective administering method in traditional countryside society.The text is divided into five parts.The first part: on the basis of using the experience of academic correlative research, elaborating the concept and some exterior characteristics of the village rules and customs.The second part: on the basis of analyzing the correlation research materials, discussing the survey of the historical development of the village rules and customs, putting up four phases of its development, namely the origin, the esteem initiative time, the mature period, the popular meridian.The third part: analyzing and discussing the ethical constitution and the social root of the village rules and customs. The third part is composed of two sections. The first section discusses the ethical constitution from public morals, marriage morals, professional ethics. The second section discusses the social root of the village rules and customs from economic basis of village, penetration of Confucian culture, influence of customs, psychological factor of society.The fourth part: synthetically discussing the ethics characteristics of the traditional village rules and customs. The fourth part is composed of three sections, the first section analyzes Confucianism is the main contents of the traditional village rules and customs, including advocating courtesy, encouraging good behaviors, protruding family order. The second section reveals the aim of Chinese traditional village rules and customs is to maintain national dominance and stabilize village order. The third section analyzes the systematization and institutionalization of Chinese traditional village rules and customs' carrying out, including actuator and people, measures of handling and punishing.The fifth part: elaborating the contemporary enlightenment of the traditional village rules and customs to the present time, including two ways of the construction of citizen morals and adding up autonomous theory of villagers.
