The idea of the university is the basic concept that instructs the university practice, which also relates to the existence way and the development direction of a university. It is a theory system that concludes both the philosophy viewpoint and the education idea. The theory of university functions is one part of this theory system and is especially important as the foundational content and core idea of it. It stipulates the university functions and the responsibility, relates the content and the way which the university practices and involves the questions that what should the university does and how to do it. The functions of the university are keeping on evolving and gradually becoming varied, diverse and pluralistic under the influence of differential philosophy. In the process of enriching and developing our own functions, our national universities have obtained some success, but also appear some questions. It can be considered that the pluralistic "functions of the university" is not only one opportunity of vigorous development but also a difficult challenge. Now our country university reform and development practice must reset on the right philosophy viewpoint and correct standpoint. And only taking the right theory of university functions as the foundation and starting point, then we can make reasonable policy-making.This article analyzes the functions of the university by the method ofMarxist historical materialism and dialectic, in hoping of affording some useful thoughts, ideas and projects by analyzing the history and the Intrinsic relates of university functions. This article consists of four parts:Part 1, Explain and discuss the connotation and conception of the university functions and the idea of a university from the angle of analyzing their relation.Part 2, Summarize the theory characteristic and historical backdrop of three main university functions: teaching, science research and social service by analyzing the evolving process of the functions of the university, and describe the economical, political and ideology factor that urging its evolvement.Part 3, Elaborate the society and history demand of university functions evolvement and affirm the necessary of pluralistic change, which is not only due to the social existence but also the truth development.Part 4, Research three main functions of the university and the inter constituents by Marxist dialectic, and reveal the dialectic relationship within them. Provide a methodology on university reforming and developing by analyzing the present situation and problem of the university functions, in hope of securing China's university developing in harmony.
