Mathematical understanding is one of the focus of the concentrations in recent research of mathematics education, the reasons lie in that mathematical understanding is one of the important aims of mathematical course and mathematical teaching , it also plays an important part on the development of mathematical study ability and mathematical attainments of the students. Therefore, teachers should not only pay attention to the mathematical understanding of students, but also explore effective measures and strategies that improve the development of mathematical understanding of students actively.Adopting the methods of researching on the documents , the author summarizes the development of the research on mathematical understanding. And basing on cognition theories and constructivism theories, the author not only analyses the meaning of mathematical understanding, but carries on the qualitative analysis on the actuality of mathematical understanding in middle school and high school by adopting observation in classroom, testing students' understanding ability and communicating with students and teachers.Basing on the work above, the author finds out that mathematical teachers are influenced by the factors such as subjective understanding about mathematical understanding, the objective assessment, etc, that is why some deficiencies exist in the teaching strategies that improve students mathematical understanding ability ,such as neglecting the autonomy and level of students' understanding.Aiming at the problem above, the author discusses how to improve students' mathematics understanding in the course of classroom teaching, including presenting the content of mathematics, communication and assessment as well as feedback in the classroom. Meanwhile, put forward some concrete suggestions to the teachers with expectation of inspiring to their actual teaching, with a great deal of examples.
