The globalization of modern technology and economy has promoted the English language to become a global means of communication and cultural exchange. Having an expert control of the language has become a dream for many Chinese learners. The pressure from the learners and society is pushing the circle of language teaching to improve their professionalism in some technical aspects. But the pressure is also hurting the profession through its sui generis havoc on the professional ethos. The damage can be found in the omnipresence of unethical practice in the classroom, in the deteriorating teacher-student's relationship, in mishandling the students who are trapped in academic trouble. And all in all, Chinese teachers of English are facing a challenge of the reputation crisis on an unprecedented scale in the heart of the students and hence the society. In order to rectify this situation the new Chinese ELT Standards was issued in 2001, which indicates the beginning of the reform of foreign language teaching. The success of its implementation depends much on the quality of teachers. The new standards advocate the concept of learner-centeredness, and "humanistic concern over student's development."In light of these developments in the teacher's education in China, this study aims at a reflection of the current problems with teacher's professionalism at one particular teacher's school based on the investigation among the students. Through description and reporting on the findings from the investigation, the author hopes to propose basic principles that should be taken into consideration when we construct a baseline for teacher's professionalism. The methodology of this study is narration. By intensive talks with 16 sample students and interviews with another 169 students, the paper analyzes the effects of teachers' improper behaviors to the students and the causes of these misbehaviors as well, and lastly concludes that there is a need to clarify the bottom-line for teacher's professional standards now in china. The paper consists of 4 parts. The first part deals with the theme, background, methods and tendency of the subject; the second part is to reflect on the behaviors and misbehaviors of some English teachers; the third part is conclusion of the professional standards of English teachers and relevant tests; and the fourth part is discussion of the implications of this study for teacher's career development.
