This paper aims to: 1, collect and compare those original materials of the Discussion over Yuwen Education in order to offer a panoramic view and a historical record for it; 2, give a inside-out analysis over these materials and reconsider the Discussion thoroughly and profoundly, with the target of revealing the difference and contradiction among different standpoints and ideals.This research finds that, the Discussion over Yuwen Education should be divided into 3 stages: the first stage is defined as criticizing and ante-criticizing period(1997-1998) , the second one as academic discussing and thinking criticizing period( 1999-2000), while the third as discipline constructing and discussing period(2001-2002). The conclusion is that, as a discussion improving from outside toward inside, and from subordinate areas toward central ones, it displays a solely characteristic in the last 100-year history of Yuwen Education development in its revision of the depth of Yuwen Education problems , of the vitality and wide-spreading of its harmfulness , and in its large number of participants, the focused attention paid by the whole society and its long-lasting time. Essentially, it's a fight over the essence and idea of Yuwen Education, a striking blow given by the humanistic ideal toward the instrument ideal, and an enlightenment of humanitism in the 100-year history of Yuwen Education.
