Zhengzhou City Urban Village "floating Population" Of Community Identity

"City village" is a special type of community lies in the joint region of urban area and the suburb. "Floating population" in this article refers to the residents living in the houses rented from local residents of city villages. The majority of floating population includes "peasant workers and traders", "young people graduated from colleges and universities", "migrants from other cities" etc. "Community identity" means feelings a resident may have towards the place where he lives, such as "love", "dependence" etc, upon which a resident may build an attachment to the place, "virtual community" in this article is a kind of community created by "floating population" in terms of certain personal relationships.In the former exploring research, I have found that the floating population have strong attachment to the "virtual community", whereas they less identify with zhengzhou city, especially city villages. What is the reason for this? To answer this question, I started the research on the "community identity" of floating population in zhengzhou city.Through computer data processing and qualitative research I found out the causal factors of the "community identity": "virtual community identity", "city village identity", "how long they have lived here", "where their family live", "communication with their neighbors", "participation in local community business", "community service they were offered", "social ensurance they have" etc.From the point of structure-function theory, the reason lies in the lack of certain organizations(structure) of the city, through which the floating population's basic demands can be effectively satisfied, so that they fall back on the non-institutional personal relationships. That is to say, such communities as "region-related relationships" and "blood-related relationships" satisfied the floating population's basic demands in the city, undertaking the social support function of the city-system. Thus, the "virtual community" can exist in the city, with the floating population strongly identify with it.From the view of community work, to make the floating population identify with zhengzhou city, the government should take measures to fulfill the floating population's basic social demands such as "community participation" and "communication with neighbors" etc. The idea is: the floating population living in city villages should be equally brought into local community administration and service system and be encouraged to participate actively in various community activities.
