| It would be better to regard science education and humanities education as two different sides of the same education than to see them as two kinds of education. All sorts of education contain both science and humanity, the difference only lies in the amount of the two aspects. The distinction of science education and humanities education rest with education idea and method, not the contents and amis. All kinds of curriculum should be a unity of science and humanism. The ideal of curriculum in all higher school is to seek the balance between science and humanity. From the trace of curriculum evolvement, we can see that science and humanity have been the two sides of higher school curriculum all through the ages. To keep the homeostasis, the essential tension should be maintained between science and humanity, so as to ensure the development of the higher education, individuals and the whole society. The two sides of education can be obscured each other as well as promote each other. In practice, there are two main approaches to keep the balance between science and humanity of higher school curriculum: course offering and curriculum design. Only when science education and humanities education each is hi its proper place can the higher education prosper. So that science and humanity should give attention to each other but should not be integrated. |
