With the development of globalization and the further reform and opening to the out-side world in our country, more and more bilinguals arc needed. In recent years schools in many parts of the country launch the experiment of bilingual instruction. As a hotly debated topic of the curriculum reform, bilingual instruction is increasingly drawing people's attention.After reading a large number of relevant materials, I find that a huge number of researches on bilingual instruction have been done abroad while few such researches have been carried out in our country, let lone the study of the experimental evidence. To explore the present situation of the reform of bilingual instruction, in the research an intensive investigation is implemented in the middle schools located in one district in Shanghai, which are experimenting bilingual instruction at present. Based on the result of the investigation, an analysis and rational thinking are made to offer some enlightenment for the improvement of bilingual instruction.Both of quantitative study and qualitative study are used in the research. On the base of the investigation on the general situation of the district's bilingual instruction, three representative schools are chosen and intensively investigated. The technique involved in the research is mainly questionnaires and interviews.The results of the investigation and analysis show that at present the practice of bilingual instruction in middle schools is generally at the point of the beginning and all of the schools investigated are groping their way forward in the process of experimenting bilingual instruction, that although there still exist conflicting opinions on bilingual instruction among headmasters, teachers and students, most of them support it. Besides, the research reveals a lot problems and difficulties that the schools meet in the process of the experiment of bilingual instruction at present, such as the vagueness of the objective of the reform, the imperfection of the policy circumstances, the deficiency of competent teachers, the short supply of suit ready teaching materials, the lack of coordinated system of evaluation, the weakness of the relevant research and so forth. The investigation also shows that the pattern, extent and effect of the experiment of bilingual instruction of different types of schools are greatly different according as the concrete conditions and situations of schools are different.Based on the research and analysis, several questions about bilingual instruction are discussed in the thesis, including the conception of bilingual instruction, the necessity, feasibility and objectives of implementation of bilingual instruction. At last, some concrete suggestions for the promotion of bilingual instruction, such as to create supportive policy circumstance, to enhance teacher-training, to develop teaching materials, and to reform the system of evaluation, are accordingly offered.
