In this thesis, I use relevant modernized theory to describe the psychological course that the foreign student of China changed progressively from court official to modern intellectual from Opium War to the May Fourth Movement. In this course, on one hand they inherited some qualities of court official as they had close connection with the traditional culture. On the other hand, they appeared to one situation that tradition interweaved with modernity each other, grew and declined constantly because they absorbed new knowledge and caused the thought to change.Since the first batch foreign students of China appeared in latter stage of Qing Dynasty, they introduced western scientific cultural knowledge and concept and shook the moribund traditional culture foundation. The Children studying in U.S.A. and the navy persons studying in Europe sent by Qing Government did not break away from Qing Government's system, but they prompted the modernized transition about technology. They have had some modernity. In latter stage of Qing Dynasty, the students studying in Japan realized that they mustoverthrow the autocratic monarchy and set up democratic republicanism. Although they still had the qualities of court official, they had modernization in their thought and action. From then on, the students studying in Europe and American had higher cultural knowledge level, so they caught up from behind. Inspired with democracy and science, they paid more attention to respect and pursue the value of knowledge and strived for making independent personality.Through the argumentation of this thesis, we can draw a conclusion that the new quality of modernity of every generation of foreign student denied the qualities of court official of the previous generation to make the new quality of modernity can be developed constantly.
