Qilu University Education With Modern Shandong

In the modern history of west ?east culture intercourse ,christian education, especially higher christian education is a controversial question . on the one hand, it was brought into China by means of force and unequal treaty ,what抯 more ,it抯 final goal was to conquer china with protestant ,so it was regarded as a settlement of foreign culture . on the other hand, christian school led western educational system into china at the first , which lashed the old education of feudalism and developed modern education . To a certain degree ,they acted as bridges between west 梕ast intercourse. This article is tried to study Cheeloo University and Mod- ern Shantung Education from individual and local history. Cheeloo University was built on the background of international and internal factors. The former was the extension of modern capitalism culture, the latter was the eagerness of the chinese to the new education after the Opium war. They want to save their nation from doom and survive. The two factors interplayed ,and made Cheeloo University experience a pro- cession of primary school, middle school and college The process of Cheeloo University was continuously metropolitan territory, secular and academic process. In the process, Cheeloo University抯 every aspects mainly imitated western pattern and developed in terms of the times ,this not on- ly ignited Chinese modern education, but also acted as a model in the process of Chinese modern education. On the modern Shantung society ,the modern education developed slowly ,it experienced the late Qing dynasty ,the Northern Government and the Nationalist Government. The ruler of different period adopted different policy ,so they made different effects on the development of Shantung education. As a modern Christian university which set up more earlier in Shantung even in China, Cheeloo University opened new general model. It is importent to the modernization of Shantung education about teachers training ,medical educa ?? tion and the whole educational system. But on the contrary ,Shantung modern e- ducation increase the pressure to Cheeloo University with its development , espe- cially the higher education抯 development. It accelerate the University抯 develop- ment and secularization while not christian. As a christian University, Cheeloo University was protected from extrality which made it have two aspects: First , it violated sovereign of Chinese education and trained some students who wordshiped foreign and partly realized its christianity抯 aim, Second ,it had good affection to modern west ?east inter- course of culture, the modernization of Chinese education, the transforming of social traditions and the training of new quatified personnel. Today ,we can draw on Cheeloo University抯 experiences and serve for our education including university抯 adjusting and building , making use of private and foreign property for our education.
