Problem situation setting refers to presenting a stimulating pattern or situation to make the statement of a problem correspond to the students’cognitive state. Problem situation setting plays an important role in solving a problem. The problem situations included in textbooks have great guiding effects on practical teaching as the textbook is the main carrier of teaching contents. The problem situation setting is close to students’lives, which can arouse students’learning interest and guide their thinking. Hence doing some investigations and analysis on the current situation of the problem situation setting in textbooks is vital to improve the quality of mathematics teaching.The paper takes the middle school mathematics textbook (Jiangsu Science Version) as an example to do some research on the problem situation setting in the following three ways. First, the paper defines the concept and analyzes the values of the problem situation setting according to some relevant theories and its current research situation. Next, the paper makes a statistical frequency analysis on the different kinds of problem situations set in the textbook. Last, based on some questionnaires and interviews on teachers, the paper gives some in-depth information on the problem situation setting and several comments from teachers.Through the above ways of text analysis, statistical analysis, questionnaires and interviews, the paper gets the following conclusions:Contents and patterns:the contents of the problem situation setting are various but some limitations still exist in the general distribution of different patterns. In order to correspond to cognitive rules of students, the situation setting emphasizes the connections with students’lives and experiences. However, some operational situation settings are too simple and plain.; Purposes and functions:The teachers think that the main purpose of setting situations in textbooks is to increase students’learning interest, stimulate students’mathematical thinking and help more understanding of mathematical knowledge. However, the problem situation setting does not work well in increasing the application sense of mathematics and it lacks some follow-up effects; The problem situations given in the textbook are used by most teachers, impacting the practical teaching a lot; When choosing the problem situations in textbooks, teachers mainly consider the appropriateness of them, teaching content, teaching progress and Students situation; Teachers evaluate whether the problem situations are interesting, applicable and related to mathematics. Among the three factors, the relations to mathematics are the most important.Aiming at these problems, the paper gives some suggestions to improve the problem situation setting in mathematics textbooks. On the one hand, to improve the contents of problem situations in textbooks, we can add some historical and cultural contents about mathematics. We can also create some comprehensive activities for more practical operations. Updated cases and clear frameworks are required to ensure the successful application of the problem situations. On the other hand, teachers need to make more efforts and be trained to better understand, interpret and apply the teacher’s manual.
