Komuz is a traditional ancient Mongolian plucked string instrument and, the same as morin huur, represents the musical culture of the Mongolian nationality. In 1976, with the joint efforts of Gao Qinggeletu from the Inner Mongolia Song and Dance Troupe and many other literary and art workers, komuz, the Mongolian court instrument which has been rarely seen for a long time, comes back to life again.Since kids usually start learning instrumental music at the age of 4 to 8, we must rely on the school education system to effectively protect and inherit komuz. Therefore, the author takes the music lessons taught in the Second Mongolian Primary School in Xiwuzhumuqin Banner in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region as the teaching and practice base for promotion and inheritance of komuz. With the aim to protect the Mongolian komuz culture, the promotion and practice process of Mongolian komuz in music teaching in primary schools are discussed in this paper by adopting such methods as literature review, field investigation, and interviews, etc. By passing on the komuz music that can suit characteristics of physiological and mental development of primary school students, the author seeks to guide elementary school students to understand the komuz music culture, thereby strengthening their recognition of the traditional Mongolian culture. For this reason, the author went to Inner Mongolia and conducted a series of investigation and teaching activities and has proposed corresponding countermeasures and suggestions to cope with the problems found in the komuz teaching process in the elementary school. The paper consists of the following three parts. The first part gives a brief general introduction to the history and evolution, music composition, folk inheritance and inheritance in schools of komuz. In the second part, based on the author’s study of the present komuz teaching situation in the Second Mongolian Primary School in Xiwuzhumuqin Banner, the corresponding teaching design concept is put forward; an exploratory classification of the different stages in the inheritance of komuz is offered; the teaching methods frequently adopted in the inheritance process of komuz are summarized and the problems existing in komuz teaching in the Second Mongolian Primary School in Xiwuzhumuqin Banner are found. The third part presents the following suggestions to deal with the problems found. First, local education authorities should strengthen the protection and inheritance of komuz with policies; second, research into music education theories should be strengthened; third, the komuz teacher training system should be improved; forth, the promotion of komuz in schools should be vigorously strengthened.Modern society has entered the information age and multi-media digital age. The author believes that we can make use of certain modern technological means to achieve inheritance and protection of komuz culture. For example, in terms of TV propaganda, some programs introducing the history and culture and other aspects of komuz can be produced by cooperating with TV stations, so that the komuz history and culture can be introduced to the public through TVs. In terms of promotion through broadcasting, the songs played with komuz and listener interactive programs can be broadcasted on the air by cooperating with local broadcasting stations. In terms of promotion on the internet, the history and other aspects of komuz can be vigorously promoted by aid of the broad coverage of the internet.Only in this way can more people know komuz to the extent as they know about morin huur, so that komuz will be frequently seen in daily life and close to common people.Based on the author’s investigation, research and analysis of the teaching practice of Mongolian komuz in primary schools, support and cooperation of the local government and education authorities are still needed and much foundation work has to be thoroughly implemented so as to promote and spread Mongolian komuz in Mongolian schools. Despite that the road ahead to develop and inherit komuz is tortuous, the future is promising. The author firmly believes that the thriving of komuz can be achieved in the near future as schools in the Mongolian regions vigorously promote komuz teaching.
