In the development of chemistry, chemists usually construct models to simplify or express their theory to others in the academic exchanges. However when it comes to the interactive in chemistry education, teachers seldom pay attention to their students cognition of models, and attach importance to consummating the modeling process As a result, students’cognition about models remains a concrete level, instead of a higher abstract level, which might hinder the obtaining of knowledge and settling a dispute. This paper outlined previous studies from ontological, methodological and epistemological perspective of models, then sketched the origin and development Lewis structure. And on this basis, this paper defined concept of mental models, in addition, constructed two-dimensions and three-dimensions classification systems of mental models about Lewis structure from the scientific and content dimensions, proposed students’ modeling process of mental models. During the practical study, this paper conducted pretest, post-test and teachers’questionnaire. The teaching process is based on analysis of pretest. Through the combination of analysis of questionnaire and individuals. It summarized and compared the types and differences among different students crossly, also comprehensively studied the development status of different students longitudinally. The outcomes suggest:(1) The classification from different dimensions of mental models about Lewis structure and the modeling process this paper proposed is reasonable and feasible. (2) Different students’ mental models about Lewis structure differ have different features. (3) Factors like knowledge and experience that students have already own and information outside and teaching methods affect the development of mental models.
