Set is not only an important conception but also the foundation of higher mathematics learning. It is also the high school mathematics starting section throughout high school mathematics learning. The teaching of set is an important turning point in the junior middle school to high school. It contains a change process about mathematics learning and the way of thinking which has a great impact on students’ subsequent learning, such as function, inequality and so on. But now,teachers and students often feel it difficulties to teach and learn this section because of not well accommodate those changes. Therefore, the key to the questions deserves to be mentioned.From the teachers’ factors, Shulman says Pedagogical Content Knowing(PCK for short) is one of the most useful knowledge. Current definition of PCK is varied for its complexity and indirect appearance. This article made a comb from these definitions and was based on Grossman’s "six elements" analysis to PCK as the theoretical background, and integrated into a suitable research framework for the study of teacher’s PCK in set. This research mainly used the research methods such as classroom observation, interviews and questionnaire test after class for about three weeks, to study three senior high school grade one mathematics teachers’ daily teaching work in Z school of Y area in Shanghai in order to show their PCK in set teaching and how to improve it.The study on three teachers reveals that teachers’ knowledge about subject content and students’ understanding is the premise and basis of teacher’s teaching strategy knowledge, and each of them continuously interact with each other at the same time, which can promote the development of teachers’ PCK levels. Although there have unified teaching materials, curriculum standard, and collective lesson preparation, but the teachers’ knowledge about the purpose of set teaching and students’ understanding is different, and they will translate this knowledge into the teaching strategy which infiltrates their teaching behavior; an expert teacher play aleading role during teaching process and a novice teacher’s set PCK absence and inappropriateness is common, As for even a mature teacher with ten years’ experiences, the characterization of some set conception may be imprecise, which can lead to poor guidance effect for the student’s learning, and mature teacher’s PCK level is relatively stable. Three teachers can reflect on their teaching behavior positively, improve and develop their own PCK level continuously. Expert and novice teachers’ PCK level is rapidly developed.The study has also found that some knowledge of related content of junior middle school are easily overlooked by teachers. In the process of comprehensive observation of Z school, this article has found that the current curriculum have certain restriction for teachers to improve their PCK, so in order to make all kinds of teachers to improve their PCK well, preparation groups need to make a further thinking to existing model.This study adds a specific subject research to the study of PCK, and complete the domestic research of set teaching research for teachers. Besides, combined with the school development at the same time, this article has promoted teaching reform and explored how to promote the effect of classroom teaching.
