Self-taught examination of higher education in China is not only an important national examination system, but also an important form of education, which is innovation of China’s reform and opening up period. Since the State Council approved the "Report on<self-taught examination of higher education pilot scheme>" of the Ministry of Education in1981, self-taught examination, after the33years’exploration and practice, has become a multi-level, multi-function, multi-type, multi-standard open education system and national examination system from a single academic education and national examination, and has made great achievements attracting worldwide attention which has made a special contribution to our economic growth and social progress. However, there are some problems with self-taught examination which seriously restricts its development. Therefore it’s necessary to do research into the self-taught examination to maintain the healthy development. This paper theoretically further enriches the contents of self-taught examination, and explores the sustainable development strategies of China’s self-taught examination from the current practice which has important practical significance.The full text adopts the document analysis, data analysis method and so on, focusing on self-taught examination and the Sustainable Development.The paper is divided into five parts:The first part,the introduction. Firstly, raise the issues, including both the urgent problems of self-taught examination and the inevitability of the sustainable development. Secondly, explain the purpose and significance of the study. Thirdly, define self-taught examination, lifelong education, the learning society and the sustainable development. Finally, illustrate the main content and methods of the study.The second part,the basic characteristics and development of higher education self-taught examination. Expound the basic characteristics of China’s higher education self-taught examination including "combination", openness, autonomy, flexibility, and high efficiency as well as four stages from birth to development.The third part, special significance and value of higher education self-taught examination. Analyze significance and value of higher education self-taught examination from structuring lifelong educational system and achieving the learning society, promoting the process of popularization of higher education and promoting the realization of educational equity.The fourth part, analysis of the current situation and problems of higher education self-taught examination. Based on the analysis on the current situation of self-taught examination, elaborate on some issues including serious examination oriented Education, emphasizing more examination than teaching, administrative intervention and so on.The fifth part,sustainable development strategies of higher education self-taught examination. Study and explore the sustainable development strategies for self-taught examination and improve the self-taught examination system.
