Since college students will be representative of intellectual in the following half century in China, their cultural identification will surely impact national cultural identification and the way social values develop. However, there are problems and even crises in contemporary college students’ attitudes towards values of Chinese traditional culture, mainstream ideological culture, market economy culture and western culture and their cultural identification. Therefore, to examine college students’ cultural identification not only is a reflection upon their cultural stances and attitudes but also has great strategic significances. In this paper, college students are examined as an independent group. From the perspective of college students’subjectivity, this paper explores their current cultural identification, analyzes problems in their cultural identification with different cultures and their corresponding reasons and attempts to construct college students’ multiple cultural identification education, In the survey, this paper finds that generally college students’ cultural identity shows a positive posture in China against the backdrop of globalization, for they are attached to Chinese traditional culture; they share recognition of market economy culture and are open to and tolerant with foreign cultures. But their cultural identity is not without its problem. For example, the decreasing recognition of some mainstream values to some extent impacts college students’recognition of and confidence in Chinese characteristic socialism; their increasing identification with western cultures and abandonment of Chinese traditional culture lead to extreme adoration of Western cultures and despondent national self-respect, self-confidence and self-pride; their dependence upon mass culture, fetish for consumption culture and alienation from elite culture drive them to excess dependence upon flat and philistine lifestyle and loss of responsibility; their wandering and hesitation between the new value system and the old one makes it impossible for them to pin down their principles and basic values. Those problems are mainly products of social culture, college students’ education, and their own factors like interpersonal communication. Besides, college students experience their second phase of rapid growth in which their observation, memory, thinking and imagination develop quickly and gradually grow into maturity. Therefore, it is necessary to direct their immature ways of cognition, psychological state and ambiguity between themselves and the other with positive forces. In this sense, this paper starts to construct college students’multiple cultural identification from the following aspects. The first is the concept of multiple cultural identification education. One point of this concept is to lead college students to respecting cultural identification and differences and their coexistence and sharing. Another point here is to cultivate college students’ cultural consciousness and confidence. The second is four basic strategies of multiple cultural identification education. The first strategy is to provide resources for multiple cultural identities so as to lay its firm foundation. The second strategy is to cultivate college students’emotional consciousness and skills needed for multiple cultural identities. The third strategy is to reconstruct college students’ faith. The fourth is to cultivate college students’identity with "binary citizens" and their consciousness and responsibility as both citizens of China and the globe. The last strategy is to produce multiple cultural school environments so that college students are able to study and live in a cultural environment filled with democracy, openness, justice and empowerment. |
