As an important part of the kindergarten mathematics education, sort activity can promote children to form the idea of sequence, and it can help children to perceive the relationship of quantity, at the same time, it also can establish the foundation of the relationship of number and quantity, the relationship of ordinal number. This study design was conducted under the guidance of Vygotsky’s theory:zone of proximal development, through participatory observation,the main purpose is to understand the4-5year-old children’s different levels(like high-level, middle level, and low level) on the nature performances of the sorting tasks, and to find their zone of proximal development and guiding strategy.Sort test material for checking the length is the arithmetic of0.5cm6cm-10cm, the width of the paper stick is2cm. I selected six intermediate child for the study who is the students of a provincial demonstration kindergarten in Nanjing, and the number of higher, medium, low level of student’s mathematical ability is2. The study used descriptive statistics method to record the different levels of length sorting ability of the4-5years old children’s math skills development,and divide the sorting task performance into strategy performance, completion of results, description of the results and then code the results.Through the study I found all the three kinds of the4-5years old child have difficulties in describing the result of the sorting; the children of high level of mathematical ability can complete the task well and be able to use higher method; The children of the middle level can finish the task but can’t use the strategies and need further guidance; while the children of low-level can only finish the task reluctantly and can’t use the strategies to help finish the task,they must be digged the zone of proximal development.
