Recently the importance of history of mathematics is realized for education during teaching when mathematics and the concept of mathematics teaching are understood more deeply. New syllabus of mathematics courses have been used with history of mathematics included in high school.It has been more than 100 years since the initial attempt to make use of history of mathematics in the mathematics course of high school. The knowledge of history of mathematics has been included and'history of mathematics (elective)'will be included in textbooks, which shows history of mathematics has been taught and it is necessary to apply the knowledge of history of mathematics in high school. However, currently how is the application of history of mathematics in high school? How well do teachers know history of mathematics in high school? How do teachers in high school think that history of mathematics is included in textbook? How can history of mathematics be appropriately applied in teaching? How do high school students know history of mathematics? How do students in high school think that history of mathematics is included in textbook? What factors can influence the effect of teaching history of mathematics? Based on the concept of the New Curriculum, how can history of mathematics be appropriately applied in teaching? In order to answer these questions, the theory and practice have to been deliberately and deeply studied.In this paper, firstly the theoretical basis and literature review show the necessity of applying the knowledge of history of mathematics in teaching. Then the subject of this paper is introduced.Secondly, students and teachers in high school and students majoring in mathematics in universities are surveyed through questionnaire and interview, whose main aim is to know the situation of applying history of mathematics in high school and study the related theory. The following fields have been covered: 1. How well high school students know history of mathematics, 2. How high school students think the function of history of mathematics, 3. How well high school teachers know history of mathematics, 4. What are the opinions of high school teachers on that history of mathematics is included in textbooks, 5. How well students in universities know the basis of history of mathematics, 6. The methods students in universities obtain the knowledge of history of mathematics and how students'opinions on the function of history of mathematics. The main results include: 1. Generally students and teachers in high school and students majoring in mathematics in universities lack the knowledge of history of mathematics, 2. Most of them know the function of history of mathematics, 3. Most of teachers in high school can not effectively apply the knowledge of history of mathematics, 4. There is no appropriate textbook for high school teachers and no good methods to make use of history of mathematics in teaching.Thirdly, the factors and causes which influence the application of history of mathematics in teaching have been analyzed and the related theory of applying the history of mathematics in teaching have been studied under new course system, which include: 1. The strategy to apply history of mathematics for high school students (1) the historical origin searching (2) stories (3) methods comparison, (4) explanation of logic process. 2. The rules (1) truth and continuity (2)reasonable and feasible (3) target and choice (4) diversity and interest. 3. Suggestion: (1) the aim of applying history of mathematics should be clear. (2) History of mathematics in high school teaching should be appropriately applied. (3) reasonable suggestion (4) Evaluation of high school teachers should be improved (5) High school teachers should improve the understanding of history of mathematics.Finally, the results are: most of high school students know the importance of history of mathematics and think it is necessary to include history of mathematics in teaching; although most of high school teachers know the importance, they randomly apply it in teaching. In this paper, some suggestion is provided: it is necessary to apply history of mathematics in teaching; hope that high school teachers can realize the importance of history of mathematics and apply it in class; teach effectively history of mathematics and meet the requirement of new course system.
