Yongding Under The Ocean Hometown Social Change

Xiayang Town of Yongding County in Fujian Province is a famous hometown of overseas Chinese in Hakka's area. As early as the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing period, there had been the Hakkas of Xiayang who pioneered a living in the Southeast Asia. From the Opium War to the founding of the PRC, a large number of the Hakkas of Xiayang emigrated mainly to Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Myanmar and other countries in the Southeast Asia. During this period, there were a total of three times of emigration. There were many patriotic leaders of overseas Chinese in the overseas Hakkas of Xiayang. On the one hand, they had made an indelible contribution to the host country in the aspect of socio-economic construction; on the other hand, they had made positive contributions to the social changes in the ancestral spot of the hometown of overseas Chinese in Xiayang. However, because of the interaction between the overseas Hakkas of Xiayang and the hometown of the overseas Chinese, the hometown of overseas Chinese of Xiayang has witnessed world-shaking changes. However, with changes in cultural identity, this link is declining gradually. Therefore, the focus of this essay is about how to reconstruct the social network between the hometown of overseas Chinese of Xiayang and the overseas Chinese so as to enhance their interaction to promote sustainable development for the hometown of overseas Chinese of Xiayang.The essay explores the social changes of the hometown of overseas Chinese of Xiayang, the interaction between overseas Hakkas and the hometown of overseas Chinese, and the cultural identity and the network reconstruction, thereby expounding the opportunity of the development in the hometown of overseas Chinese of Xiayang. It's based on the related knowledge and theory of multiple disciplines ranging from ethnology, sociology and history. The author adopts an approach combining overall grasp and individual case study and relies on field survey as the main means of research.In the first chapter, the paper states the purpose and meaning of choosing this particular topic, reviews relative literatures and proposes research thoughts and methods. Chapter two focuses on the natural and social environment of the hometown of overseas Chinese of Xiayang which is unique and provides necessary qualification for the development of the overseas Chinese and social changes. Chapter three is mainly analysis of the processes of overseas Chinese and the survival and development of overseas Hakkas, and explains the development between overseas Hakkas and social networks of overseas Chinese Organizations. Chapter four mainly figures out the economic and cultural contributions of overseas Hakkas in Xiayang make to the hometown of overseas Chinese, and explains the development of overseas Chinese Affairs in the hometown of overseas Chinese of Xiayang, which is based on exploring deeply the interaction and reconstruction of the social networks and reveals the social changes of the hometown of overseas Chinese in Xiayang. Chapter five is the conclusion part of the article in which the author believes that in the context of globalization nowadays, the identity of people in Xiayang town which used to be a traditional hometown of overseas Chinese has gradually weakened and the interaction between the people in the hometown of overseas Chinese and overseas Chinese has weakened as well in the social change of hometown of overseas Chinese. This essay uses the perspective of the anthropological research and by comparing with other overseas Chinese; it explores the cultural characteristics of overseas Hakkas and tries to reconstruct the identity of hometown of overseas Chinese, interaction and the specific social network of hometown of overseas Chinese, and then tries to explore new opportunity for development in the hometown of overseas Chinese.There are two innovations in this paper. The first is in the starting point in the study, where the author is on the viewpoint of the Hakka, and the other innovation is emphasizing on exploring the issue at hometown of overseas Chinese of Xiayang and the solution for the development of hometown of overseas Chinese of Xiayang. Through the description of social changes of Xiayang, the author affirms that the overseas Chinese of Xiayang has made a great contribution to the development of the ancestral home on the one hand, and on the other hand, the author pays attention to the problem of during the development of hometown of oveseas Chinese in Xiayang as well and hopes to base on their own characteristics of hometown of overseas Chinese of Hakkas to find a new road of the sustainable development for Xiayang in the context of globalization.
