As an important part of Mao Zedong Thought, Investigation Theory of Mao provides the Chinese revolution practice with theoretical guidance, and also is the fundamental starting point of the ideological & working methods of Chinese Communist Party, and still exerting very strong instructiveness and practical significance in modern times. Based on thinking about the modern significance of Investigation Theory of Mao Zedong, this paper is divided into three parts: Part One is mainly a retrospection of the founding, development, maturity of investigation thought of Mao Zedong. Part Two summarizes the basic theory and the main approaches of investigation theory. Part Three is to explore the contemporary significance of investigation theory.In Part One, the author traces back the founding, development and maturity of investigation theory of Mao Zedong. Mao Zedong's spontaneous investigation and research objectively is the preface to his life-time investigation. And it also expedited investigation thought of Mao Zedong. After experiencing baptism of China's new-democratic revolution, the investigation theory of Mao Zedong was gradually formed and grew mature. By means of investigation and research, Mao Zedong combined Marxist principles with actual conditions of Chinese revolution to delimit the missions and directions of each stage. The Analysis on classes in China during the Great Revolution is the preliminary theoretical achievements of Mao Zedong's investigation and research. The Investigations of Agrarian Revolution is the representative work which marked the formal formation of investigation thought of Mao Zedong. The works such as On Investigation in the Countryside and the Preamble and Postscript of Investigation in the Countryside during the War against Japan and the War of Liberation deepened the investigation theory. In the period of socialist construction, Mao Zedong's investigation theory was developed ups and downs. The successes as well as the failures have proved that investigation theory of Mao Zedong was of extreme importance. Part Two summarizes the main contents and value orientation of Mao Zedong's investigation theory. The basic theories include: (1) investigation is the precondition of getting correct knowledge—"No investigation, no the right to say."(2) investigation should be targeted—"have a definite object in view ."(3) investigations should be adhere to the mass line—"be willing to be a pupil."(4) investigations should be intensive well as comprehensive—"not only to gain a superficial understanding through cursory observation, but also to study deeply."(5) investigation theory should be always held on——"forever."The main methods of Mao Zedong's investigation include: class analysis, conflict analysis, and synthesis analysis. Fundamentally its value subjects are the masses. The investigation aim is not only to obtain a scientific knowledge of objective reality but also to solve the problem occurring in Chinese revolutions and constructions. Seek welfare for the masses and serve the masses. Therefore, its value orientation adhered in investigation theory of Mao Zedong is to integrate practice with theory, and design correct policies for Chinese revolutions and constructions.On the basis of these discussions, Part Three is to explore the contemporary significance of Mao Zedong's investigation theory. Although the international and domestic situations have undergone tremendous changes in the new century, the Investigation Theory of Mao Zedong is still the fundamental way for us to resolve the major contemporary issues. However, the complexity of contemporary society makes the object of investigation more complicated, so the various means of investigation are required. In the new historical period, the concept of scientific development which was put forward by the CPC Central Committee, headed by General Secretary Hu Jintao, demands to uphold Investigation Theory of Mao Zedong.Investigation Theory of Mao Zedong is extremely important the current construction of a well-off society. Investigation & research is the basic link of building socialist well-off society. Firstly, investigation thought will help us correctly understand and objectively look at the changing situation. Secondly, it will help us properly handle the internal contradictions among people. Lastly, it can always maintain the advanced nature of CPC members.As Comrade Jiang Zemin pointed out,"Strengthening research is not only an issue of working methods, but also a fateful issue which determines the gains or losses and successes or failures of the Party and the people's cause."At present, China is deeply implementing the concept of scientific development. To achieve the goal of constructing all-around well-off society, we must inherit and develop Investigation Theory of Mao Zedong, combine the theory with practice, adhere to the mass line, adhere to obtaining true knowledge from investigation, thus, and promote the cause of building socialism smoothly forward.
