International trade theory originated from the economic ideas of mercantilism. It has already become an independent branch of economics, and made continuous and effective development by the completion and exploration of the economists such as Adam Smith, David Ricardo, List, Heckscher, Olin and contemporary scholars like Leontief, Krugman, and YANG Xiaokai. This paper will look back all the traditional ideas, review major international trade theories within the western economic circle, and consider how they were formed. Meanwhile, we'd like to give analysis to those typical and significant international trade theories, make classifications in accordance with certain standard as to form a clear and good-structured theoretical system for it. We will also comment on evolution and development of international trade theory, and reveal the principles inside. In the end, based on the logic awareness towards those theories, we will identify the motivation of international trade theory, and try to give some presumptions on their future development. Thus a clear picture of fundamental systems and development of international trade will show before us.
