一,Purpose and significance of writing this thesisSince the reform and opening up, diversified operation has resulted in a great growth in China. A large number of enterprises entered the line of diversified operation and quickly developed. However, in mid and late 1990s, these enterprises that experienced a growth on the basis of diversified operation got into difficulties and encountered challenges. Currently , diversification and specialization become a hot topic .The diversified operation of Meishan Rolling Stock Works (MRSW) is taken as a case in point so as to disclose any problems and challenges faced by MRSW, and to find out the reason for the failure of MRSW in diversified operation. Hopefully this paper can inspire thinking of the enterprises engaged in the diversified operation through analysis of MRSW's diversified operation. 二,Logical structure of this thesis Chapter One: Introduction of the background, motives, course of diversified operation, and history of management system's development, and outline of MRSW's diversified operation, Chapter Two: The problems faced by MRSW in terms of the diversified operation. The conclusion of MRSW's failure in the diversified operation is drawn from the drastic loss and lack of competitiveness of the diversified product mix. Chapter Three: Analysis of the causes of failure of MRSW's diversified operation. It is thought that the problem of system and fault in strategy are the major causes resulting in the failure of the diversified operation. Moreover, as a result of the problems that existed in project deciding and in management the diversified operation worsened. Chapter Four: The writer is trying to give some constructive proposals and enter into a conclusion in terms with diversified operation. 三,Main contents and viewpoints As stated in the paper, MRSW's entering the line of diversified operation is to spread risk, seek growth, and solve the problem of reemployment of redundant personnel against a certain historical background. However, imperfectness in system, fault in strategy, deviating from its own advantages, dispersing of resources and entering into too many businesses, and improper management lead to the failure of the diversified operation. In view of this, MRSW should go back to the track of specialized operation, and then gradually downsize and retreat from the existing diversified businesses. Specification and diversification are the two approaches to the goals of enterprise. In China, shortage of supply has become the past. The golden time for the Chinese enterprises to expand depending on the diversified operation has gone away. The development in the future will largely depend on specification featuring intensive cultivation. With emphasis on the existing resources and the core capability, diversified operation can not go beyond its limits. 四,Main contribution Because the focus of the paper is on discussion of the case of MRSW's diversified operation, the discussion of diversification is both substantial and true to life. All the problems involved are particular in their own ways, and they are most likely to be met by other enterprises. Hence the said problems are also characterized by their universality. The writer points out the problem from the point of view of a manager rather than an outsider. It is the writer's hope that this paper could inspire thinking of the managers of enterprises. Because the writer has engaged in management of a few diversification divisions of MRSW for many years, the writer has gained a better understanding of the diversified operation of MRSW. All suggestions in the paper are the results of long-time thinking of the writer. However, due to the limited theoretical knowledge, flaws are unavoidable in the paper. Any advice and criticism from teachers, classmates, and friends are cordially welcome.
