An Analysis Of The Comprehensive Chinese Community In Latin America

There are large amounts of Chineses immigrants with a long history of diaspora in the Latin American countries, and integrated Chinese associations are active in these countries, with Peru being their representative. Therefore, the dissertation chooses the Chinese immigrants and the Sociedad Central de Beneficencia China in Peru as a typical case. By combining the historical and current situations of overseas Chinese in Peru, and analyzing the development and contributions of the Sociedad Central de Beneficencia China, the writer analyzes the various functions, problems and futures of overseas integrated Chinese associations in Latin America. On that basis, the writer will provide suggestions for China’s extensive cooperation with them. This dissertation uses the theory of “overseas Chinese public diplomacy” and mainly adopts auxiliary methods such as historical analysis, case study and documental analysis. These methods will be used comprehensively in the research on Peruvian overseas Chinese diaspora and the Sociedad Central de Beneficencia China.The dissertation analyzes the history of Chinese immigration to the Latin America and pay much attention to overseas integrated Chinese associations. By analyzing the history, occupational situations and living conditions of Chinese immigrants in Peru, the dissertation concludes that at the initial stage, the Chinese immigrants went to Peru and other Latin American countries as "coolie", but through constant struggling in the process of "survival- adaptation- fusion", those overseas Chineses have gradually raised their social status. The most obvious manifestation is that no obstacle exists for their political participation. On that basis, those integrated associations, such as the Sociedad Central de Beneficencia China, have great influence because of their various functions and wide range of activities. By analyzing the development history, the organization structure and the contributions of the Sociedad Central de Beneficencia China, the dissertation discovers that those integrated associations, such as the Sociedad Central de Beneficencia China, have experienced several reforms. They help the overseas Chinese, preserve traditional Chinese culture, interact with the locals, support the developments in China, advocate the peaceful reunification of the Taiwan region and mainland China and promote the friendly relation between China and Latin American countries. They are the witnesses of the overseas Chineses in Latin American countries, symbols of unity of those Chinese immigrants and bridges between overseas Chinses, China and Latin American countries. Nowadays, the associations have new developments, such as the increase of number, the diversity of members and the internationalization of activities. However, due to various historical or realistic reasons, the associations have different contradictions between or inside themselves to deal with.The dissertation suggests that China should strengthen the cooperation with those associations such as the Sociedad Central de Beneficencia China. On the one hand, it can benefit China’s public diplomacy in Latin America to let the Latin American communities realize a real China. On the other hand, mainland China can accelerate the the pace of peaceful reunification with the Taiwan region. Given the defects of original methods that emerge during the process of cooperation, we should have appropriate ways in idea, strategy, publicity, research and behavior.
