"Eej Nuur" which means Mother Lake in Mongolia, located in the East Wujumqin Banner, is one of the four biggest salt lakes of Inner mongolia. In Qing dynasty, the administrative authority of the Eej Nuur belongs to Mongolians. Among that period, the area around the lake had formed a unique cultural tradition. This thesis is based on the field survey. By analysising the Mongolians’ tradition culture about the slat lake, this thesis discusses about the symbolic significance and "Local knowledge" behind the Mongolians’ salt culture.The thesis is consisted of Introduction, Text(Three Chapter), Conclusion, References and Appendix, In the Introduction part, we talked about the reason, meaning, method, general situation of the research. In Chapter One, we introduced the natural condition, management form, historical background of the East Wujimqin Banner and the Eej Nuur. In Chapter Two, we discussed about the Mongolians5 traditions about the salt in daily life, customs of transforming salt and folk legend about the Eej Nuur. By discussing about this, we analysised the symbolic significance behind the Mongolians’ salt culture. In Chapter Three, we analysised the value of the "Local Knowledge" by discussing the inheritance status of the "Eej Oboo" and local people’s attitude toward the present situation of the Eej Nuur. In Conclusion, the author summarized own view based on the content of the thesis. The appendix is consisted of the relative interview materials and pictures.
