The concept of need has always been an important concept of academic, and it is not only an important category of Marxist philosophy and economics, but also closely related to our daily life. With an in-depth study of human problems in the theoretical circle, the needs of the people attract further attention, so some scholars consider the needs of people as an important category of learning to carry on the research. Marx’s criticism of the capitalist society is strong, and Marxism theory can provide effective thought resources to analyse the cause of ecological crisis and solve the problem. The development of capitalist society in modern times mainly meets the needs of the people, and it is demand of transition and endless greed that causes damage to the environment in modern society, so Marx’s theory of needs is of the vital significance for analysis and critique of modernity society. Combined with the actual conditions of the current social development, constantly improving and enriching the theory of relationship between human needs and ecology in the Marxist historical materialism horizon, and in-depth studying Marx’s theory of need, is able to provide guiding value for today’s environmental problems. This article mainly discusses the ecological significance of Marx’s theory of needs from four views, the brief introduction of Marxist theory of needs, the impact of the alienation of people to the natural environment and the unity of Marxist needs of the person and ecology. Ecological crisis is actually a human crisis and it more reflects contradiction between the finiteness of natural resources and the needs of the people. Owing to human excessive plundering, the natural resources are exhausted, and the needs of the people are beyond the ecological carrying capacity, seriously threating human survival and development. In this context, mankind must realize the importance of protecting ecological environment, adjust the needs of the people and the allocation of resources, and build harmonious ecological needs, to solve the problem fundamentally and promote the development of man and nature harmoniously and sustainably.
