On Moral Courage And Its Development

Nowadays there are knowledge and behavior separated phenomenon in social morality. When we face the moral choice, many people can't practice morality spontaneously and actively. This is not because they can't distinguish right or wrong, but in most cases is lack of moral courage and to avoid taking the responsibility. Moral courage is a moral strength that individual practices correct value in the bad situation. Not only will it consolidate and develop the correct moral motivation, but also it will develop the willpower of the individual. Moral courage not only concerns about moral problem, but also concerns about the power of life. Moral courage is one of the necessary virtue that leads one into a happy life, and is the moral character to construct the harmonious society.This thesis is divided into three chapters. The first chapter discusses the concept and types of moral courage. By studying the meaning of"courage", I propose the meaning of courage and moral courage. By summarizing the opinions of Chinese and western thinkers, moral courage is divided into three types. Moral courage includes dare to do ,dare not to do and dear to be. Dare to do or dare not to do is a kind of moral courage that one cope with outside world. Dear to be is a kind of moral courage to cope with oneself.The second chapter analyses the influential factors of moral courage, which is moral emotion, moral cognition and social environment . Moral courage comes from the correct moral cognition and individual moral need. Society should be a strong power for moral courage, helping individual change courage into behavior. We analyse cognition by viewpoints selection, the ability of reasoning, moral judgment and moral evaluation. Emotional factors are discussed from empathy, responsibility, honour .Social environment mainly discusses the social opinion and social protection.The third chapter expounds the cultivation of moral courage. School's endeavor in cultivating students'moral courage is very important. Firstly, the school should practice moral courage. The school should avoid being used as tools and be used to meet the needs of society. The school must stop immoral behaviors both inside or outside the school yards. Secondly, students form a correct understanding of the moral courage , which could take life education as the center, establish correct viewpoint and moral ideal and teach students how to do judge. Thirdly, it is to develop responsibility, to enrich the students'moral emotion, to express the correct angry to phenomenon in order to maintain the social morality, which could make the students become a rich sense of responsibility and love. Finally, we should encourage the moral behavior, make courage as a habit of students to form a brave moral personality.
