In the 20th century's creation of new music, with the disintegration of tonality and the translation from common writing to particular writing, composers has worked hard to create original and distinctive effect of harmony, the techniques also became more personalized. For the research of harmony's theory and music creation, it's very important to clear the context of history about harmony's development and grasp the characteristics of different periods'harmony techniques.This text focus on the comparing about the term'Harmony'in the different edition'New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians', which edited in 1980 and 2001. It compares the two version of the term'Harmony's translation and takes a comprehensive and deep comparative study about the difference with the method of comparing, morphology and musical analysis. Then it gets each stage of harmony's development in the 20th century, summarizes the new changes of harmony practice during the 20 years while the old version updates to the new one, and tries to find the trace of the harmony's development from the 20th century to now.
